Sydney Metro City & Southwest project
The Sydney Metro City & Southwest is a landmark 30-kilometre rapid transit line currently under construction in New South Wales, Australia. This major infrastructure project extends the existing Sydney Metro Northwest line from Chatswood, through the Sydney CBD, and onwards to Bankstown, providing high-frequency, high-capacity rail services to previously underserved areas of the city.
A key feature of the project is the new 15.5-kilometre twin-tunnel rail crossing beneath Sydney Harbour and the city centre, continuing through to Sydenham. This new underground corridor will fundamentally change how passengers travel across Sydney’s metropolitan area.
Alongside this, upgrades to the Main Western Line will help increase the capacity of Sydney’s rail network by up to 60%, allowing more than 100,000 additional commuters to travel across the network every hour.
Construction commenced in 2017, with the line expected to open in 2024. The project has an estimated cost of between $10 and $11 billion.
